Over the past week our national federations have been celebrating International Women’s Day, highlighting the theme of “Give to Gain”. Across the Pacific, hockey communities came together to recognise the important role women play in sport, families and community life. Activities focused on creating opportunities for connection, learning and participation, while reinforcing the idea that when we invest time, support and opportunities into women and girls, everyone benefits.

In Vanuatu, communities gathered to bring together both long-standing and new participants who have been part of local programs. The day centered on empowering mothers in the community, with guest speaker Gloria Lango sharing her experiences as a successful businesswoman and reflecting on the important role women play in supporting their families and building opportunities through small businesses. The event created a welcoming space for the “mamas” to connect, share experiences and enjoy fun hockey games together, reinforcing the spirit of giving time and support to strengthen the wider community.

In the Solomon Islands, the celebration combined education with inspiration through sessions focused on safeguarding and women’s rights. Participants explored how creating safe environments and respecting the rights of women and girls helps build stronger communities and healthier sporting spaces. The discussions encouraged everyone to recognise their role in supporting equality and protection for women in sport, highlighting that when communities actively give respect and opportunity, they gain confident leaders, role models and future change-makers.

Across Samoa and Papua New Guinea, hockey was used as a way to bring people together in celebration of women and community. In Samoa, local schools took part in friendly games to mark the occasion and encourage participation. In Papua New Guinea, activities in both Lae and Port Moresby created opportunities for volunteers, participants and community partners to connect, share experiences and learn together. Mixed games, community discussions and outreach activities reflected the spirit of women supporting women, with men and boys also playing an important role in championing equality.

Together, these activities highlighted the strength of the Pacific hockey community and the many ways the theme “Give to Gain” can be brought to life. Whether through sharing knowledge, creating safe environments, encouraging participation, or simply bringing communities together through sport, each federation demonstrated the powerful impact of investing in women and girls. By continuing to support and uplift one another, hockey across the Pacific is helping to build stronger communities both on and off the field.
