Hin4H and Papua New Guinea Sport For Development Day
Published Fri 14 Apr 2023
The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), is an annual celebration of the power of sports to promote sustainable, peace, and human rights. The theme for IDSDP 2023 is 'Scoring for People and the Planet,' which emphasises the potential of sports to benefit both people and the planet. The theme reflects the belief that sports can have a positive impact not only on individuals and communities but also on the environment.
Sports can empower women and girls, young people, persons with disabilities, and other marginalised groups by promoting inclusion, tolerance and respect for diversity. Sports can also contribute to environmental sustainability by promoting healthy and active lifestyles and encouraging the use of renewable energy and sustainable materials.
Overall, 'Scoring for People and the Planet' means recognising the potential of sports to benefit both people and the environment, and taking actions to promote sustainability, and protect the planet while advancing social and economic development goals.
In Papua New Guinea the International Day of Sport for Development was celebrated with a combined sports day held at the National Stadium. Here is the YouTube video from the event.
The Papua New Guinea Hockey Pavilion is a prime example of how sports can contribute to sustainable development. The pavilion features an International Standard Turf facility which also considers the environmental impact of the development. To protect the environment, they took measures to preserve the surrounding shade trees, and even planted additional trees to mitigate the impact on the environment.
